Risk/Security Survey
There are those who tend to underestimate it, there are those who fear its consequences and there are those who understand its great importance first and foremost to the organization and then to its managers in general and the Security Manager in particular.
Over the years, I have conducted many and varied risk surveys, both on land and in the marine environment, some for huge organizations and some for small and medium-sized organizations and companies.
When it is recommended to conduct a risk survey:
• Upon entering a new role as Security Manager.
• With a fundamental change in the organization and its facilities.
• After a significant event.
• In planning construction for a new site / facility.
• Planned as part of a work routine, once every few years.
• According to management’s requirement.
The survey should be conducted by an objective professional, after preparatory work and gathering information from all management and operational factors in the organization.
The results of the survey will serve the organization as an annual and multi-year control and planning tool and will help determine the necessary budget according to priorities.
The survey will cover technological, procedural, and operational gaps as well as safety vulnerabilities.
If the survey is conducted as part of the assessments for a new facility or construction, various parameters will be considered, such as:
• Location.
• Threat.
• need.
• Regulation.
• budget.
There are various approaches to the results of the survey, essentially it will highlight and reveal the gaps, some critical and some less, most of them will need one resource or another, work time, money, etc., but in the end of the process the organization will be better prepared for any harm.
